Scanning the motorcycle seat.
Little by little 3d technologies occupy their place around the world. These are technologies of future, of course, if only correctly applied. A process of scanning a motorcycle seat by a scanner of our design is given below. It was necessary to carry out 3D scanning and to obtain a STL model as a result.
An object for 3D scanning – the motorcycle seat.
Scanning was done by our scanner adjusted to scan area 200. Quick viewing had shown that the seat didn’t require matting with spray except the slightly glaring surface of plastic below and few metal elements.
The seat after slight matting is located on an auxiliary board with marks used to match separate scans.
Scanning such type objects was an ordinary task for a 3D scanner. In this case 3D scanning had been done initially from one side of the object and then the object was turned with the other side and scanning repeated for the second side. Once both sides had been scanned, separate fragments were automatically matched against markers attached to the black board. The board served as an auxiliary device. Markers had been attached to the board beforehand. This allowed to avoid sticking markers to the object itself and to start scanning immediately. Black color of the board allowed to avoid needless scanning of a large area of the board itself. After scanning it was obtained 24 fragments for one side and 38 fragments for the other side. Total quantity of triangles of all fragments made 53.3 million.
All 62 fragments were united in one reference system. In spite of great number of triangles, the software provided with the 3D scanner fulfilled its task without problems.

After matching two fragment groups, the result STL model was built at one operation together with covering small holes originated at places difficult for the 3D scanner.
The final result was the waterproof STL model consisting of 2 million triangles. Well scanned pimples and the slightly seen “HONDA” inscription on the side surface underlined general scan quality.
The scanner software allows to build STL surfaces with various resolution. By customer request the STL model might be stored in a simplified variant, consisting of 500 thousand triangles.
